Japanese Tea Ceremony Lesson Plan

All 3 levels$14

Bow, turn the bowl, and discover how a single cup of tea became one of Japan's most respected arts.

This five-day unit on chanoyu, the Japanese way of tea, gives you a ready-to-teach plan for three levels, Littles (K-3), Middles (4-6) and Bigs (7-8). Your child or students step inside the tea room and learn the utensils by name. They explore Sen no Rikyu's four principles, wa, kei, sei and jaku, and find out how matcha is shade-grown and stone-ground. Littles test powders in water and make a tea corner scroll. Middles run a whisk lab and model seasonal wagashi in clay. Bigs read The Book of Tea, run a settling lab and argue whether slow rituals still matter. Every level ends with a calm tea gathering, with a caffeine-free barley tea option.

Perfect for homeschool families, multi-age classrooms, Japan studies and world cultures units.
