Lesson Plan
Meet Frida Kahlo, the Mexican painter who began making art from her bed and went on to paint some of the most famous self-portraits in the world, including one painted in Detroit.
This five-day Women's History mini lesson gives you a short, ready-to-teach plan for three levels, Littles (K-3), Middles (4-6) and Bigs (7-8), for siblings or a mixed classroom. Each day follows the same rhythm: Reading, Writing and Words, Science and Math, Hands-on Project, then Friday Show and Tell. Littles fill in a fact file, mix primary colors and paint a bold self-portrait. Middles build a timeline of Frida's life, test color ratios and write a postcard from the Blue House. Bigs run a marker chromatography lab, calculate Rf values and write an argument about what made Frida an artist. Her story is told gently and kindly for every age.
Perfect for Women's History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, artist studies and short biography units.
